The Processes Involved In The Making Of Silk Wool

One of the most interesting natural fibers found in nature is silk. The history of silk goes back over 3000 years to the Chinese, who made use of this special fiber. The demand for silk goods and garments has remained strong season to season and even year to year. China is still the biggest producer of silk and exports it all over the world. This silk is identified by the term "China Silk" on all goods made from it.

So how is silk produced? Lets consider the method. The silk worms natural habitat is in the mulberry tree. These are grown in large numbers for the silk worm breeding program.

When the eggs from the silk worm hatch, they are then fed mulberry leaves. The little caterpillars grow rapidly, in just thirty five days they are ten thousand times heavier than when first hatched. At this point they begin to spin a silk cocoon.

The silk production commences with the worm, it is produced by glands in the silkworm's head. The silk is now spun out in liquid form through openings called spinneret. When this liquid touches the air, it becomes a solid and develops silk. These little worms can each spin nearly a mile of silk and they engulf themselves in a cocoon more than a few days.

At this point the worm would transition to a moth. However just before that happens they are often killed. The objective of killing them at this stage is due to the fact that when they are ready to exit the cocoon they secrete a liquid that dissolves the silk to allow them to exit the cocoon. This ruins the silk. Needless to say not all of them are killed, a portion are reserved for breeding.

After the cocoon are harvested, the undamaged cocoons are brushed to find the end of the silk filament. These are then put on a reel. Up to one thousand yards of silk material are contained in each cocoon. This is called raw silk. A silk yarn can be made from combining several filaments. Taking this yarn as well as combining it with wool creates silk wool, it is one of the most beautiful products used in the making of garments or goods, beautiful silk wool fabric.
